PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Travel by train to Abergavenny, then catch the Trawscymru T4 bus (for Newtown) as far as Llyswen. Or travel by train to Hereford, then catch the Trawscymru T14 bus (for Brecon) to Hay-on-Wye. From Hay-on-Wye or Llyswen you will need to have pre-arranged a taxi to take you the final few miles to your destination; but please note that once there, you will not be within walking distance of any facilities (other than the wildlife and acres of open countryside) so please plan ahead.
DIRECTIONS
IMPORTANT - SAT NAVS DO NOT APPEAR TO BE RELIABLE IN THIS CAREFULLY SCRAMBLED PART OF WALES - THE LD3 0SR POSTCODE WILL TAKE YOU TO THE WRONG LOCATION. If you prefer to use the grid reference or what3words, please see above, otherwise please see below for written directions - and information on what to do once you've arrived.
Please note that you will be driving along single-track country lanes, that are steep in places, towards the end of your journey. The private track to Pen-y-Cwm itself comprises of either stone or concrete. If you prefer less lane travelling, we recommend approaching from Hay-on-Wye (where you can also top up on essential supplies, books, ice-cream…).
If you are visiting us during the winter months when it’s likely to be frosty or snowy, please do call ahead to check the conditions before you travel. Pen-y-Cwm is at the foot of the Black Mountains (310m or 1020 ft altitude), so often gets a dusting of snow if conditions allow.
FROM THE SOUTH EAST (SOUTH ENGLAND ETC VIA SEVERN BRIDGE)
From Abergavenny follow the A40 towards Brecon. After Crickhowell take the right turn onto the A479 (this junction is about a mile from Crickhowell and next to a pub called the Nant-y-Ffin Cider Mill). Follow the A479 for 10.3 miles to Talgarth. At the roundabout take the second exit and then take the second right turn towards Three Cocks on the A4078.
After about a mile you can easily miss a right turn towards Velindre – don’t! Follow this lane for 3.5 miles passing through the village. Then, take the second turn on the right (first turn is for Newcourt Farm Campsite) along a no-through road, signpost to Pen Yr Heol (chapel).
Follow this lane for 1.3 miles. The house, farm and the steep bends in the road are about half way. After this you will pass another farm on your left, then look out for the turn to Pen-y-Cwm on the left. There is a metal gate at the end of the track (which may be open), with wooden railings and stone walls to each side. There is a chapel and one more farm at the end of this road, so you’ll know if you’ve missed it.
FROM THE NORTHERN/CENTRAL ENGLAND (SCOTLAND, BIRMINGHAM, HEREFORD, ETC)
Join the A438 from either Hereford or Leomister. After travelling through Whitney-on-Wye, there is a left turn that takes you over a toll bridge, which is a scenic drive into Hay-on-Wye; or continue to Clyro and turn left before the Texaco petrol station. From Hay-on-Wye take the B4350 out of town towards Brecon. This will take you past the Swan Hotel, bend round a right hand corner and then follow a straight section of road away from Hay. As you approach the end of the straight section of road some 500 yards there is a large layby and a turn on your left - take the turn towards Llanigon. Follow this lane for 2.5 miles passing through Llanigon village and a very wee place called Fforddlas. Carry on past the cross roads, then past Tregoyd PGL. Take the next turn on the left along a no-through road, signpost to Pen Yr Heol (chapel).
Follow this lane for 1.3 miles. The house, farm and the steep bends in the road are about half way. After this you will pass another farm on your left, then look out for the turn to Pen-y-Cwm on the left. FROM SOUTH/WEST WALES (CARDIFF, PEMBROKESHIRE ETC)
From Brecon follow the A470 towards Builth Wells and Hay-on-Wye. The A470 magically transforms itself into the A438 about 4 miles from Brecon (follow all signs towards Hay-on-Wye). After by-passing Bronllys, continue for 1.5 miles into Three Cocks, still on the A438. Immediately after the Three Cocks Hotel (on your right) turn right and follow the lane for two miles until you reach a T-junction opposite Tregoyd Farm and Tregoyd House PGL Centre. Turn right, drive for 500 metres. Take the turn on the left along a no-through road, signpost to Pen Yr Heol (chapel).

FROM NORTH WALES (ABERYSTWYTH, SNOWDONIA ETC)
From Builth Wells follow the A470 towards Brecon. Continue straight in Llyswen (stop following the A470), joining the A479. At the roundabout take the first exit, follow for 1 mile, then turn right in Three Cocks. After 500 yds (before the Cock Hotel) turn left and follow the lane for two miles until you reach a T-junction opposite Tregoyd Farm and Tregoyd House PGL Centre. Turn right, drive for 500 metres. Take the turn on the left along a no-through road, signpost to Pen Yr Heol (chapel).

ON ARRIVAL
On arrival, please locate the key in the key safe to the right of the front door. You will find the key code in your pre-arrival email message. On leaving the property please replace the key back into the key safe, taking care that the key sits properly and does not jam the lock when closing.
You will find the keys for the kitchen patio doors in the patio door.
Please park in the car park above the house. The road around the cottage is for maintenance access, and we don’t recommend driving around it as it can become muddy. Please also take care of ditches and drops when navigating the car park in your vehicle.
You will find everything else you need to know in “The Book of Things” in the kitchen.
