THINGS TO DO

Our top 5

  • You are literally IN The Black Mountains IN Brecon Beacons National Park. From your cottage/ cabin pick your peak, walk out the door and up on the common. Climb Lord Herefords Knob, Hay Bluff, Waun Fach. Walk to our favourite pub, The Bulls Head Craswell, for a feast. Your options are endless with the Brecon Beacons on the horizon to the west. Ask us for routes!

  • It’s always worth it! Rise early, walk there in the dark with a head torch and watch the spectacle happen from the best seats in the Black Mountains. It is simply the best feeling: nature showing off, the fresh air, the feeling of freedom and of being ahead of your game.

Or/and – grab your favourite drink and some nibbles, walk to the chosen viewing spot, have meaningful conversations, cosy up and watch the wonder of the sunset unfold. Walk back at dusk with a warm and glowy feeling.

  • Town of books (over 30 bookshops!), home of the Hay Festival and the newly refurbished Hay Castle and many, many wonderful shops and people. Some must visits are: Kate The Baker (only Thursdays and Saturday mornings), Hay Deli, The Old Electric Shop and café, Booths Bookshop & luxury cinema, The Globe, Shepherd’s Ice Cream parlour, Bain & Murrin (tat to the highest quality) and many many more.

Thursday and Saturdays are market day and excellent for food shopping and picking up snippets of unreliable gossip.

  • We are horsey people. Studies have shown that horse riding is beneficial to most things in life, including stress reduction and general exercise of the body and mind. For exploration of the beautiful Black Mountains on horseback Paul at Transwalestrails is your man. He provides safe ponies and lots of experience. They are located a bit further along the Black Mountains (25 mins away) and surrounded by a spider's web of riding trails. What3Words: ///shiver.examiner.developed

A bit further afield (35 mins) and great for beginners is the lovely Becky at Bryngwyn Riding Centre. What3Words: ///penny.revealing.escalated

  • The best place to start is from: Wye Valley Canoes in Glasbury. Very friendly and very well organised. You can go for a few hours or a full day. They are only a 5 min drive from us. What3words: ///prowl.incur.distanced

Whilst on the river enjoy the otters, ducks, swans, kingfishers, sand martins and ringed plovers. Take a picnic and have a peaceful lunch stop on the bank and bring your swimmers and go for a dip.

Local eating.

Walk to the Bull’s Head at Crasswell over the hill for the best pub in the area. A 5-minute car journey or 20 minute bike ride from Tregoyd will find you in Hay-on-Wye with Chapters Restaurant, The Old Electric Café, Hay Castle Café (delicious brunch), The Blue Boar or the Three Tuns to try.

Talgarth (10 mins away by car) is also worth visiting with a superb butcher, its own mill and bakery and Gertie’s Café serving lunch next to the mill. Other favourites are The Felin Fach Griffin (15 mins by car), The Tram at Eardisley, and The Stagg at Titley (Michelin star).
